Wayne Gardner or otherwise known as the “Wollongong Whiz” became the first Australian to win Motorcycle’s premier class of racing, the 1987 500cc World Championship. Racing for the Rothmans Honda HRC Team, Gardner made his Championship debut with them in 1985. On his way to winning the 1987 Championship, Gardner won 7 of 15 races and finished the season with 178 points.
