Valentino Rossi moved to the Factory Yamaha Team in 2004 after winning the 2001, 2002 & 2003 World Championships with Honda. Rossi won the last ever 500cc World Title before the series changed in 2002 the new 990cc MotoGP class of racing.
Many labeled the move as crazy, Yamaha had not won a race in over two years, or a World Title since Rainey won back in 1992. Rossi was able to take his beloved crew with him too Yamaha, and the move instantly paid off. Rossi won his first race onboard the Yamaha in South Africa, and by doing so he became the only rider to win consecutive races with different manufacturers.
2004 proved to be a very exciting year for racing with some incredible battles between Biaggi, Rossi & Gibernau. It was Rossi though who had the edge, he went onto win 9 of 16 races and finished 2nd on two occasions. Rossi was able to wrap up the Championship in fantastic fashion at the Australian Grand Prix held at Phillip Island. He won the race and also secured the World Championship.
