Valentino Rossi is considered to be one of the greatest Motor-cycle racers of all time. With nine World Championships, Rossi is still one of the top riders in the world and capable of winning title number ten before he retires. Rossi has won across all racing categories, the 125cc in 1997, the 250cc in 1999, the 500cc in 2001 as well as the MotoGP class in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008 & 2009.
The 2003 MotoGP season for Valentino Rossi would be his last as a Honda rider as it was announced he was joining the Factory Yamaha Team. Many people questioned this decision as Yamaha hadn’t been competitive for many years. Rossi was motivated for the challenge and eager to prove that his current MotoGP success was not because of the superior Honda machinery that he was racing.
Rossi dominated the 2003 season by taking nine pole positions and nice race wins to secure his third consecutive premier class World Championship and last with the Repsol Honda Team.
Rossi’s 2003 helmet would become one of his most popular designs, as well as one of his longest running. Rossi wore this design as his primary helmet between 2003 and 2005. Superstitious fans consider this to be his ‘lucky helmet’ as Rossi won 29 races on two different bikes (Honda and Yamaha) over two years. Valentino personally told me around 2018 that this is still one of his favorite helmets of all time.
It’s a striking and a more grown-up design than Rossi had ever worn previously, gone were the cartoon Sun and Moon designs from previous years and in their place was a stylish black sun on a yellow background, and a yellow moon on a black background. The front of the helmet simply featured a red chin area with a yellow ‘number 46’ and as a result this helmet model is usually referred to as the ‘VR46’ helmet.
AGV released this helmet in their top of the line AGV Ti-Tech shell.
