Troy Bayliss is a 3 x World Superbike Champion (2001, 2006 & 2008) and one of the most successful World SBK riders ever. He won 52 World SBK races plus 1 in MotoGP and collected 26 Pole Positions during his World SBK career, all while racing for the Factory Ducati team.
Bayliss moved to MotoGP in 2003, to join Ducati’s MotoGP effort in their first season racing in the premier MotoGP class. The Ducati was highly competitive, with Bayliss taking three third places and finishing sixth overall in the championship. He briefly led at Philip Island, Brno and Welkom, and only narrowly losing the rookie of the year award to Nicky Hayden. Teammate Loris Capirossi took their first win at the Circuit de Catalunya.
Bayliss continued with the Factory Ducati Team in 2004 before joining the Sito Pons Honda Team for the 2005 season. Bayliss struggled to come to terms with the Honda, and never finished inside the top 6. A broken arm had him sidelined for the final 6 races of the season.
Bayliss returned to World Superbike for the 2006 season and was crowned World Champion. He won 12 of 24 races and finished on the podium another 4 times. After this success, and the injury to Sete Gibernau, Ducati offered Bayliss a one-off entry in the final MotoGP race of the year in Valencia. Remarkably Bayliss qualified 2nd and led the whole race, which ended in a Ducati 1–2. This was the first time any rider had won a race in both the World Superbike and the Grand Prix world championships in the same year. His impressive victory was somewhat overshadowed by the dramatic events involving Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden that ultimately determined the 2006 title winner.
