Rossi arrived at his home grand prix in a Hawaii inspired race kit and leathers. After setting the fastest time in final qualifying ahead of rivals Kenny Roberts Jnr & Loris Capirossi, the reigning world champion Rossi was out to impress his home town fans and take his 4th victory of the season. Bad weather stopped the race after only 7 laps, and riders had to adapt to the wet conditions for the restart. Unfortunately on the last lap while leading the race, Rossi slid off the track which allowed Alex Barros to take the victory.
