Chris Vermeulen was born on the 19th of June 1982 in Brisbane, Australia. Vermeulen first raced in the Superbike class in 2004 and 2005 for the Ten Kate Honda team, finishing as series runner-up in 2005. He also won the World Supersport Championship for Ten Kate in 2003.
Vermeulen joined the MotoGP World Championship in 2006, and raced for the Rizla Suzuki Team. During his career, Vermeulen was regarded as a wet-weather expert and showed these skills by winning a very wet, rain soaked 2007 LeMans Grand Prix.
