He made his World Superbike debut in 1995 with Yamaha. He moved to Honda in 1998 where he finished the season in 5th position. Edwards earned his first victories with the double win at Monza, this was followed by a win at Brands Hatch as well.

In 2000, Edwards rode the new Honda VTR-1000 SP1/RC51 and was  crowned World Superbike Champion after points leader, Noriyuki Haga was disqualified for testing positive for a band substance. Edwards finished second in the championship in 2001, however reclaimed the title in 2002 in dramatic fashion, clinching the championship at the final race of the season in Imola, Italy.
